Overseas Digital Services: Avoiding Pitfalls with Regions, Gift Cards and Account Security
Gift card won't redeem, can't change your region, or someone asks you to “pay with gift cards”? Based on official help pages from Apple, Google Play, Steam and PlayStation, here are the most common pitfalls and a pre-order checklist.

Contents
When buying overseas gift cards or using overseas digital services, the same few problems come up again and again: the region doesn't match, the balance can't be used, the region can't be changed — and scammers posing as customer support. This article is based on each platform's official help documentation. Platform rules can change at any time; always follow the latest official information.
Rule one: the region must match
Gift cards, account balances and subscriptions are almost always tied to your account's country / region:
- PlayStation: the official page is clear — a code can only be activated if it matches your account's country / region, and once an account is created, its country / region can't be changed.
- Google Play: your balance is tied to your Google Play country / region. After switching countries, the balance from the old country can't be used in the new one; if you switch back, you can use it again.
- Steam: the first time you fund your wallet, you may be asked for your current address to determine the wallet currency; later top-ups are credited in that currency. Steam also notes that restricting wallet codes to the wallet's currency is one of its anti-fraud measures.
- Apple: your balance follows your account's country / region. To change regions, you need to spend the balance first (see the next section).
Before ordering, check your region:
- Apple: Settings → your name → Media & Purchases → View Account
- Google Play: Play Store app → profile icon (top right) → Settings → General → Account and device preferences → Country and profiles
- PlayStation: sign in to Account Management → your personal information → edit your address; the country / region is shown at the bottom
- Steam: after signing in, your wallet balance appears next to your username in the top-right corner, along with its currency
Before you change regions
Apple. The official checklist before changing regions includes:
- Spend your account balance. If the balance is too small to buy anything, you can contact Apple Support to clear it
- Cancel subscriptions that would block the change, and wait until the subscription period ends
- Wait for memberships, pre-orders, rentals and season passes to finish, and for pending refunds to be processed
- If you're in a Family Sharing group, you may not be able to change
- Have a valid payment method for the new country / region ready
Also, Apple Gift Cards and account balance can't be exchanged for cash, except where required by law.
Google Play. The official page lists several limits:
- After you first set your Google Play country, you must wait at least 90 days before changing it, and at least 90 days between each later change
- When setting a new country / region, you must be physically there and have a local payment method
- Members of a Google family group can't change their country / region
- After changing countries, your Google Play Points are reset and your level isn't kept
PlayStation. An account's country / region can't be changed after it's created.
So if you only use an overseas service occasionally, a separate account for that region is often less hassle than switching back and forth.
Gift card scams: know the signs
Gift cards are one of scammers' favorite "payment methods": once they have the code, the money can be spent very quickly. Apple's official warning sums it up:
- Apple Gift Cards can only be used for Apple products and services. If someone asks you to pay utility bills, debts or hospital bills — or government fees such as taxes or immigration fees — with gift cards, it's very likely a scam
- Never share the code on the back of a card with someone you don't know or have never met
- Scams follow a pattern: contact by phone, text, email or social media → create panic and urgency → ask you to pay, "help out" or send a gift with gift cards → walk you through buying the cards → ask for the codes
Steam also notes that scammers have long used gift cards from major brands, which is why it decided to stop selling physical Steam gift cards in retail stores: once retail stock sells out it won't be restocked, and stores are expected to sell out by the end of 2026. Cards you already have still work, and digital gift cards remain available.
Account security: three red lines
No matter where you buy, these three things should never happen:
- Someone asks for your account password. Redeeming a gift card only needs the code.
- Someone asks for a verification code. A verification code is effectively a temporary password — never give it out for any reason.
- You're asked to sign in on an unofficial page. Check the URL carefully and watch out for fake sign-in pages.
If you've already given someone your password or a verification code: change your password right away, turn on two-factor authentication (two-step verification), then review the devices signed in to your account and remove any you don't recognize.
Problems when redeeming
Using Steam as an example, its official page has some practical tips:
- Wallet code errors: double-check easily confused characters, such as the number 0 and the letters O, Q and D; the number 1 and the letter I; the letter B and the number 8; the letter G and the number 6
- A newly bought code won't redeem: for codes bought at retail, activation by the retailer can take a few hours
- Balances can't be transferred: Steam Wallet funds can't be moved to another account or gifted
- Refunds: funds added on Steam can be refunded within 14 days if none of it has been spent, subject to Steam's refund policy
After-sales: keep your records
- When redeeming a gift card, record your screen the whole way, from receiving the code to successful redemption
- Keep the order number, payment records and chat history
- If something goes wrong, contact the seller first instead of repeatedly trying to redeem
Exchange rates and fees
The same listed price can end up costing different amounts: channels use different exchange rates; some bank cards charge extra fees for foreign-currency transactions; and in some regions listed prices exclude tax, which is added at checkout based on your billing address. When comparing prices, look at the final total, and check your card issuer's and the platform's terms for exact rates.
Follow the platform rules
Every platform has its own terms of service for account use, transfer and sharing — it's worth reading them before you start. Our store's digital services only cover gift cards and subscription payments: no shared subscriptions, no shared accounts, and we will never ask for your password.
Pre-order checklist
- Confirm your account region and wallet currency
- Confirm the gift card's country / region matches your account
- Never give out passwords or verification codes
- Never use gift cards to pay bills, taxes or fines
- Record your screen while redeeming and keep the order number
Our store is still being prepared and isn't taking orders yet; once the community opens, you're welcome to chat in the Overseas board.
